Het onderzoek van de UM vond plaats over een periode van vijf jaar in 270 klaslokalen, verspreid over 27 scholen van onderwijsstichting MOVARE in Zuid-Limburg. De resultaten laten zien dat basisschoolleerlingen significant slechter presteren op toetsen wanneer ze zijn blootgesteld aan verhoogde CO2 niveaus in de leerperiode v\u00f3\u00f3r die toets. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>De slechte luchtkwaliteit vertraagt hun cognitieve ontwikkeling, waarbij de sterkste effecten worden gemeten voor rekenen en taalvaardigheid (lezen). De gemeten effecten zijn groter dan de veelbesproken negatieve invloed van schoolsluitingen tijdens de coronacrisis. Verder laat het onderzoek zien dat de kans dat een leerling een HAVO\/vwo-advies krijgt dertien procent lager is als de blootstelling aan CO2 in het semester v\u00f3\u00f3r de eindtoets verdubbelt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investeren in ventilatie<br \/>\n<\/strong>In 2020 heeft de Nederlandse overheid bijna 400 miljoen euro subsidie verstrekt aan basis- en middelbare scholen om de ventilatie in klaslokalen te verbeteren en zo de verspreiding van corona en andere virussen tegen te gaan. Er zijn in Nederland zo\u2019n 6700 basisscholen, waarvan een recente inventarisatie laat zien dat een derde geen mechanische ventilatie heeft. \u201cHet ontbreken van ventilatiesystemen, of de aanwezigheid van gebrekkige systemen, zorgt voor een tekort aan frisse lucht in gebouwen, veroorzaakt een muf en bedompt klimaat, en vormt daarmee een gezondheidsrisico voor de gebruikers. Tegelijkertijd was er tot op heden weinig bekend over het effect van een slecht binnenklimaat op onderwijsresultaten\u201d, aldus Nils Kok, hoogleraar aan Universiteit Maastricht en betrokken bij het onderzoek.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meten en handhaven<br \/>\n<\/strong>De onderzoekers constateren dat er beperkte aandacht voor luchtkwaliteit is vanuit overheid, alsmede de onderwijsinspectie: die doet wel controles op luchtkwaliteit, maar dat is vaak bijzaak, slechts een momentopname en niet representatief. Volgens de onderzoekers is dit h\u00e9t moment voor een grootschalig investeringsprogramma -- met een investering van ruim \u20ac1.1 miljard kan een groot deel van het probleem opgelost kan worden. Deze investering valt in het niet bij de \u20ac5.8 miljard aan NPO-middelen die zijn ingezet om de corona-leerachterstand weg te werken. Daarnaast is het volgens de onderzoekers tijd om regelgeving voor wat betreft luchtkwaliteit aan te scherpen, waarbij de gestelde maximaal acceptabele CO2 niveaus (950 ppm voor scholen gebouwd na 2012 en 1200 ppm voor scholen gebouwd voor die tijd) streng gehandhaafd moeten worden, op basis van daadwerkelijk en continu gemeten data, in ieder klaslokaal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ventilatie-eis is aangescherpt<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cDe onderzoeksbevindingen van Universiteit Maastricht hebben ertoe geleid dat voor alle nieuwe schoolgebouwen van MOVARE de ventilatie-eis is aangescherpt. De doelstelling is om de ventilatie in bestaande scholen verder te verbeteren, waarbij het ventileren geautomatiseerd en vereenvoudigd wordt.
