Voorstanders claimen dat infrarood een betaalbare, comfortabele en duurzame vorm van verwarming is, terwijl tegenstanders stellen dat deze voordelen nauwelijks onderbouwd of zelfs onjuist zijn. In een kennisdossier over deze warmteoplossing zet TKI Urban Energy de laatste visies en feiten op een rij. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hoewel infraroodverwarming (IR-verwarming) al in een klein deel van de woningen en gebouwen wordt toegepast, is er volop discussie over deze toepassing. De consensus is dat infraroodpanelen een slimme toepassing kunnen zijn als bijverwarming in ruimtes die kort of weinig worden gebruikt, zoals een badkamer, studeerkamer of zolder. Over de geschiktheid van infraroodpanelen als hoofdverwarming, waarbij ze zorgen voor de verwarming van het gehele pand, bestaat echter discussie. Sommigen geven aan dat infrarood zuinig, betaalbaar en comfortabel is als hoofdverwarming. Anderen trekken het nut van infrarood precies op deze vlakken in twijfel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vergelijken met warmtepomp<br \/>\n<\/strong>Bij een analyse van de discussie ligt het voor de hand om infrarood te vergelijken met een warmtepomp, omdat het allebei (individuele) all-electric oplossingen zijn voor de verwarming van een woning of gebouw (andere technieken, zoals elektrische heaters en elektrische vloerverwarming, vallen niet binnen de scope van dit kennisdossier). Warmtepompen en infraroodpanelen zijn echter compleet verschillende verwarmingstechnieken en laten zich daarom lastig vergelijken.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Voor- en nadelen<br \/>\n<\/strong>Op een abstract niveau zijn de voor- en nadelen van beide systemen helder, maar de precieze orde van grootte is onzeker. In grote lijnen gaat de discussie over het nut van de technieken over drie typen argumenten: energieprestaties, kosten en comfortbeleving. Het lijkt erop dat warmtepompen minder elektriciteit verbruiken, maar het is onduidelijk hoe groot het verschil met infrarood precies is doordat huidige vergelijkingen vaak op schattingen gebaseerd zijn. Wel is het evident dat warmtepompen tijdens de levensduur een lager CO2-verbruik hebben vanwege het lagere elektriciteitsverbruik.<\/p>\n<p>Qua kosten lijken warmtepompen \u2013 over de gehele levensduur \u2013 beter te scoren dan infraroodverwarming, maar zonder gevalideerde claims over de levensduur is dit niet met zekerheid te zeggen. Verder is het lastig om generieke uitspraken te doen over comfort, omdat dit sterk afhankelijk is van persoonlijke voorkeuren.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alleen extreme gevallen<br \/>\n<\/strong>Door het gebrek aan informatie is het nog altijd onzeker wanneer infrarood wel een goede toepassing is en wanneer niet. Eigenlijk zijn tot zover alleen de extreme gevallen bekend. Zo zal IR-verwarming niet geschikt zijn in een woning waar veel mensen wonen, maar misschien wel als er in dezelfde woning slechts e\u0301e\u0301n persoon woont die weinig thuis is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vervolgonderzoek<br \/>\n<\/strong>Deze conclusie roept volgens TKI Urban Energy op tot een vervolgvraag aan onderzoeksinstellingen: er is meer praktijkonderzoek nodig waarbij warmtepompen en infraroodverwarming worden vergeleken op energieprestaties, kosten en comfortbeleving.
